A visit with a participant takes roughly 4 hours, so my day looks like this:
Participant arrives and I will gain their consent and collect a urine sample and the first of two blood samples which are taken to the lab and centrifuged (spun really fast).
The next step is measuring the participants height and weight, their hip and waist circumference, and their body fat and BMI. At this stage I also do a grip strength test and perform an ECG (which checks to see if the heart is ok).
Once all of those measurements are taken, the participant is x-rayed using a DXA scanner. This gives a clear image of their skeleton and body composition (fat, muscle, bone).
The participant then has an ultrasound so check the health of their liver and kidneys as well as evaluating how much fat they have around their middle section.
By this time the second blood sample is due which is then taken to the lab and centrifuged.
The participant is now ready to be fitted with some monitors (heart rate monitor, GPS and a movement sensor) which they will wear for the next 6 days.
After fitting the monitors, the volunteer with perform a treadmill test, which lasts a maximum of 20 mins, in order to test their fitness.
After the participant has left, I will sort all their paperwork to be filed away and will spend my afternoon downloading all the monitors that people have returned after their 6 days of wear.

My Interview
-
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Spontaneous but also a strategist. And I'd like to think fun.
What did you want to be after you left school?
Honestly, I had no idea.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
All the time. I wasn't a naughty kid but was easily distracted. I got on well with my teachers though.
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Depends on my mood. I love rock but I still have loads of Eminem's albums.
What's your favourite food?
Pizza. It's so easy.
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
1: Millionaire obviously 2: Longer life 3: I wish I could achieve everything that I wanted
Tell us a joke.
I'll tell you two. Joke 1: What do you call an alligator wearing a vest? An investigator! Joke 2: What kind of squats do lazy people do? Diddly squats!
