Education:
2019-current MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, University of Cambridge, PhD Candidate
2014-2019 University of Glasgow, MSci Biochemistry with a year in industry (GSK)
2010-2014 Azuolynas High School, Klaipeda, Lithuania
2002-2010 Simono Dacho Secondary School, Klaipeda, Lithuania -
Qualifications:
I had Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Lithuanian and English as A levels and Geography, Physics, German, Music and PE as B levels.
I then went on to study MSci Biochemistry at the University of Glasgow – it’s a degree where you get masters after 5 years. After 3 years at University I went to do a placement year at GlaxoSmithKline in Stevenage, UK, then went back to uni to finish my degree. Having done a placement transformed my degree straight into Masters so I didn’t actually get a Bachelor’s degree but a Masters instead which is quite handy!

Work History:
After every year at University I did a laboratory-based summer internship. I have therefore worked in Lithuania (Institute of Biotechnology, Vilnius), the UK (University of Glasgow) and Germany (EMBL, Heidelberg). The first one was unpaid but it really helped me realise that working in a lab is what I like and because of gained experience I was successful at obtaining scholarships which paid for my future summer internships. I believed that this experience was also a big contributing factor to me getting a one-year paid placement at a big biopharmaceutical company (GSK)! All of the experience at the University and outside of it made me a strong candidate for my current PhD position – I therefore cannot emphasise enough how important it is for a young person to try and get as much experience outside of school/uni! Just show your interest in emailing scientific Group Leaders and they most likely will happily take you in 🙂
I have also done a lot of non-scientific jobs in catering and customer service the summer before my final year in high school and also part-time as I was studying in Glasgow. I would highly recommend it as you not only learn to be self-sufficient and financially responsible, but also learn to plan your time better and meet people outside of university.

Current Job:
I am a PhD candidate at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, meaning that I am also a student at the University of Cambridge. Doing a PhD is more like a job than studying although you learn something new almost every day!
-
About Me:
I am a PhD student interested in how a cell makes sure that a healthy protein is delivered to a compartment where it is meant to serve its function

I am originally from a small European country, Lithuania. I came to study biochemistry in the University of Glasgow in 2014. This year I have started my PhD in the University of Cambridge, so it’s been quite a journey for me! I am curious to learn new things which is probably why I am a scientist! I also love music, playing the guitar and collecting vinyl records (music plays in my room all the time). Whenever it is sunny and breezy I go out sailing and during the week I also dance Lindy Hop (look it up, it’s a really fun style of dancing and no one is too old or too young for it!).
