About Me:
I am fascinated by microbes! They can be very beneficial but also extremely harmful to humans and all life on this planet. It is incredible how seemingly simple organisms are so sophisticated.

This is my favorite microbe, called Cryptococcus neoformans. This means it is a close relative of mushrooms and the yeasts you use to bake bread and to make beer.
Below is a close-up of the fungus, and you can see how complex it is inside. And you can see the little circle, which is a daugher being born out of the mother cell. We call this budding and the daughter cell is called a bud.

My Typical Day:
Breakfast, of course.
Then I go to work.
I answer emails and see the news, not the general news but the news relating to science and microbes.
Then I go to lab and I do my experiments, using a lot of microscopy and other cool equipment.
At the end of the day I usually have meetings. These can include helping out students to discuss experiments and to plan future work. They can also be meeting with colleagues. Then time to go home and see my family and friends and do a bit of exercise.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would buy a camera and equipment so I could post online my research: fungi growing, etc. Look at the cool videos I posted below.
